  En general, la calidad del agua en el cerdo puede determinarse midiendo la presencia de los siguientes elementos orgánicos e inorgánicos: 1. Conteo bacteriano total La contaminación del agua por bacterias se estima al medir el nivel de coliformes por mililitro de agua. Un conteo bacteriano total de 50 unidades formadoras de colonias (UFC)/ml es considerado bueno. Si los niveles de coliformes son superiores a 100 ufc/ml, se recomienda utilizar un tratamiento con cloro. Al contar con bacterias en el agua potable, es importante considerar la limpieza de las líneas de agua. Las biopelículas o biofilms en las tuberías puede ser una fuente considerable de microorganismos en el agua, y los desinfectantes a base de cloro tienen poco o ningún efecto sobre estos. Es importante eliminar las acumulaciones regularmente. 2. pH El pH del agua entre 5,5 y 8,5 se considera aceptable.
